CRAIG WADDELL
Portraits of Jessie Cacchillo
These works are based on Waddell's wife and his desire to explore and document her many facets. They have evolved gradually from a number of studio sittings. Painted over several sittings the surface tension builds with each vigorous application of paint. Waddell often works this way providing a topographical interpretation of the sitter rather than the stiffness rendered by a traditional portrait. The paint is caught in motion as he searches for the truth buried within the surface, excavating creases and crevices to reveal the landscape of the soul; subtle evocations of his own rural umbilical connection.
